Our Communities
Ocean County Town Center
New Jersey School Directory
Ocean County is aptly named as it is blessed with a beautiful coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. Many of the communities that sprang up in the early part of our history were dependant on the various waterways that fed into the coastal bays and then to the ocean. These small communities and villages were the norm for many years until the growing populations to the north and west began to come to the shore for their summer vacations. Toms River and the barrier island beaches to the north and the south are located at about equal distances from both Philadelphia and New York City. This proximity made our area a popular summer destination.
Today, we are largely a year round population as many families who visited during the summer decided to stay and become permanent residents. The construction of the Garden State Parkway and Route 195 has made for an easy commute to the business centers to the north and the west.
Historic Toms River is the County seat and is the center for legal and governmental activities. Settled in the early 1600's mainly by sailors and smugglers the resulting commerce created a bustling town that laid the groundwork for our present day communities. Supply and trade routes, which were almost exclusively by water, are now the avenues for a wide variety of recreational activities. Boating, sailing, fishing, crabbing, hunting, swimming and surfing is all readily available to the communities of Ocean County. Some of the best boardwalk and amusement areas on the East Coast are located in Point Pleasant, Seaside Heights and Long Beach Island. Great Adventure is also a short trip away and is located in Jackson Township. A few years ago we added our own minor league baseball team The Blue Claws (named for the local and tasty blue claw crab) who play in their fine new stadium in Lakewood.
If you come to visit enjoy our coastal amenities but also take the time to check out some of the historical spots and museums. The Toms River Seaport Society, The Joshua Huddy trail, the Ocean County Court House and the Tuckerton Seaport are all worth a look. Each borough and town in Ocean County has it's own particular historical significance so when you are here do some exploring and see where we have come from and where we are now and see if Ocean County is the place for you and your family.
